- Values Dissonance: The gag of the cop throwing out a homeless man at the town picnic, with the entire crowd laughing, would not be a warmly received gag today.
- The Woobie: Luther Heggs. When the movie starts, he's not taken seriously by anyone else in town because he's "keyed up" and overreacts due to his cowardly nature. Finally, when he gets noticed and accepted by the town as a whole, he ends up the victim of a smear campaign and a lawsuit.
