YMMV / The Forever Purge

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: To what extent are the Ever After Purgers motivated by racism and xenophobia? Is it a core plank of the group as a whole, or just the personal belief of some members/factions? For that matter, do the Ever After Purgers even have an ideology beyond "keep the purge going"?
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • The final battle at the border, where the Ever After Purgers get their well-deserved taste of their own medicine, culminating in Juan shooting Elijah in the head. Onscreen.
    • While it could have happened under much better circumstances, the New Founding Fathers being forced to disband after they lose control of the Purge is very karmic.
  • Critical Dissonance: Like its predecessors, it received mixed to negative reviews, but audiences seem to like this film.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: A lot of fans are drawn to the movie because it has a New Old West story rather than another urban setting like the previous films.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Though not a total unknown in English-language media at the time, having portrayed Rafael Caro Quintero in Narcos: Mexico, Tenoch Huerta's role as Juan in this movie came about 1.5 years before his role as Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever catapulted him to international recognition.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: After the end the last film, the Purge had been abolished with the newly elected President attempting to restore order to America. There were hints that the pro-Purgers would rebel against this, leading to a civil war. Instead, the film skips that and simply starts with the Purge reinstated by a new NFFA.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: As per tradition with this series, this trope crops up even more blatantly with the introduction of the Ever After Purgers:
    • Some have found them incredibly similar to the alt-right and extremist segments of the MAGA movement that surged to prominence during and after the Trump Administration. These people were and are seen as a far more unstable and dangerous breed of right-winger, who were well known for their violent outbursts and threats against perceived political enemies, even including other right-wingers who they felt didn't go far enough. This general phenomenon of extremist conservatives turning on more reasonable and traditional conservatives is frighteningly similar to the New Founding Fathers being overwhelmed by the Ever After Purgers (a monster of their own making).
    • They have also been seen as an attack on populism, due to Kirk and his compatriots taking the Tucker family hostage with the intent of killing them, simply because they're well-off.
