YMMV / The Detective is Already Dead

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: The light novel made the Oricon top 3 the year it was released. However, while quite hyped, the series didn't make a lot of fuss in the West.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Finding the story emotionally unengaging was a problem often cited in reviews, the main reason being both Kimihiko and Siesta having very little emotional range from their usual attitudes, especially in spite of all the increasingly weird plot developments about them.
  • Arc Fatigue: Even though the series is only 12 episodes long, the plot keeps doing a continuous back-and-forth between random points of two lines until the very end, which makes any possible comprehension of the whole Siesta-Nagisa story (itself a very confusing affair) arrive very late.
  • Awesome Music: Regardless of the series itself, its opening ("Koko de Ikiteru" by Mary × jon-Yakitory) and ending ("Kodo" from Kagura Nana) are both quite solid.
  • Cliché Storm: The series being entirely made of classical anime tropes mashed together worked against it when it was released, as the familiarity with those points only underlined that there was little else on it. Ironically, this cannot be entirely chalked up to the light novel's author, but also to Executive Meddling, as he had apparently composed a different story that was found to be too dissimilar to most light novels.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: For the English dub, Amanda Lee voices Natsuiro Matsuri, a Vtuber. Amanda herself would debut her own Vtuber alter-ego, Monarch, a few months later.
  • Memetic Mutation: The plot/series is already dead.note
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The anime is often compared to Gosick in premise and characters (not without some debatability, as the series actually takes more after Aria the Scarlet Ammo and other light novels), and it showed in opinions, some more critical than others.
