YMMV / The Coming of Galactus

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When he gets tired of the space insects, Galactus summons a killer robot to get rid of them: the Punisher! Of course, that robot is completely unrelated to Frank Castle. It's just that the name was too cool to be wasted in this minor robot, so Gerry Conway simply took it for his brand new character some years later.
  • Narm: Reed somehow growing a massive beard within hours is a little hard to take seriously.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Of course, Galactus will not win, and Earth will continue to exist. Still, Galactus was by far the most powerful threat who had ever been introduced in comics so far at the time. And, although he does not win, the Watcher provides a vision of what would happen if he did. He will first attack the seas... and we witness a grand canyon covered with algae and dying whales and octopuses, in great detail. He will then attack cities... and we witness a city attacked by a giant death ray. And, eventually, the planet itself would be reduced to small pieces, and Galactus would simply go on and seek some new planet.
  • Once Original, Now Common: When Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first introduced Galactus, it was the most threatening menace seen in comics ever. No wonder he had such a profound impact. Modern readers, however, are used to read about villains with ultimate powers several times in the year, and many of them are introduced and narrated with much fanfarre in comic book crossovers, where all the heroes of the verse are needed to win. Those readers, if they use the same standards, may not enjoy the story the same way.
