- Awesome Music: When you have Philip Glass, Goblin and Keith Emerson collaborating on a soundtrack, this is bound to happen.
- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: While many side character arcs qualify, Father Gus' archery practice scene is probably the most notable, as it looks like it'll be a major plot point, but nothing ever comes of it, except in a brief flashback that had no relevance to the scene in question.
- Director Displacement: Typically regarded as Dario Argento's The Church but he was the producer and one of the writers. Michele Soavi was the director.
- Jerkass Woobie: For all his abusive behavior, Herman only wanted to keep his family safe from a world that he viewed as corrupt. When he gets possessed, he's horrified and tries to kill himself with a jackhammer.
- Nausea Fuel: Overlapping with Special Effects Failure; The scene where one woman gets her face flattened by a subway train is unbelieveably, horribly disgusting and sickening! The flattened face in question looks like a mixture of crumbled haggis and maggot cheese!
