Trivia / The Church (1989)

Go To

  • California Doubling: The film is set in Germany, but the interior of the church was a Hungarian cathedral in Budapest.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The film started out as the second sequel to Demons, but was rewritten as a standalone film because Michele Soavi wanted to move away from the "Pizza Schlock" tone of the Demoni films to something more sophisticated.
    • The original script treatment, titled Ritorno alla casa dei demoni ("Return to the House of the Demons"), was about an airplane that had to make an emergency landing where it finds itself on an island with a volcano where the passengers would subsequently arrive in a "weird hell". Writer Dardano Sacchetti compared it Aliens, with the spaceship replaced by an airplane and the aliens replaced with demons.
    • Soavi and Argento wanted to film in Nuremberg's St. Lorenz, but the church refused them permits because they didn't want to be associated with a violent horror film.
