YMMV / The Beyonders

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: After giving them so much trouble over the course of the series, one would think Maldor wouldn't go down as easily as he did. What the heroes had to do to get to him was leagues more difficult than actually killing him was.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The torivors. Shadow creatures that look like featureless humans. They generally won't harm you directly unless you attack them (in which case they can, and will, defend themselves), instead opting to stalk you ceaslessly. When you sleep, they invade your dream and give you nightmares, often impersonating people you know. And when you wake up, chances are good that they'll be standing right over you. Then there's the fact that they aren't from Lyrian or Earth, but from another reality altogether.
    • And then there are the ones that actually hunt you down. There has been one, and only one person who has survived a torivor actually hunting him down and engaging him in combat...Galloran, roughly the biggest badass in this series. And he claims he was lucky.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Drake. Seeing Farfalee's reactions doesn't help one bit. She's so close to tears that she can't even manage to tell her own brother that she loves him.
      • "Failee... Where's my seed?"
    • Ferrin's death was hard to take as well, particularly because he's been unsure of himself for so long. And what motivates his Heroic Sacrifice? "[Jason, Rachel, and Galloran will] never know about this decision. They'll never know how much their friendship meant to me. But I will, and that's enough." Meanwhile, Rachel is trapped inside Felrook, and for all he knows, he could be killing her along with the others. "Since I'll never know the truth, I prefer to assume she'll survive."
      • "Are you afraid to die?" ... Ferrin paused. Tark glimpsed something in his eye, a quiet struggle to remain in control. Maybe a hint of worry. "Yes, if I'm being honest. But we all have to go. I was trying to think of a better way than this. I couldn't."
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Suicide pacts, assassinations, Cold-Blooded Torture, Mind Rape, hopeless wars, betrayal, and graphic violence, topped off with tragedy and with bleakness on the side. Still targeted at 12-year-olds.
