  • Anti-Climax Boss: Shagah gets a good bit of build-up in The Tower of Geburah as a powerful Evil Sorcerer, but goes down as quickly as Hocohino without much fanfare in the final battle.
  • Ass Pull: In The Iron Sceptre, the reveal that Poseidon is a big doll worked by little goblins. It is never explained why they are putting on this ruse, it doesn't fit with Poseidon's knowledge of the sword of Gerburah, it has no bearing on the larger plot since they'd already escaped Poseidon, and is never mentioned again. It feels like White hastily inserted this bit to avoid any criticism for including a pagan deity in his book, something that C. S. Lewis got for the Narnia books. Oddly he would go on to feature Pan in a latter book without any indication he wasn't the real deal.
  • First Installment Wins: The first book, The Tower of Geburah is the best reviewed of the series.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Betty for replacing Mary in the Grand Finale. She's considered to be a bland character who doesn't accomplish anything that Mary couldn't have done.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: After her all Character Development Eleanor never gets a chance to confront her abusive father, as the book ends with her return to Canada and the wrap-up just offhandedly mentions her father died in a accident.
