YMMV / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S06E01 "Rock Around The Block"

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: The principle of Wu wei the episode introduces isn't something the show had made up for once. It's an old Chinese-Daoist principle that means "effortless action" or "actionless action", being able to carry out tasks with skill and efficiency without effort. Western audiences would recognize this state of mind as being "in the zone," being able to carry out tasks without conscious effort. The opening shows a serviceable demonstration, Leonardo using a simple block to counter Donatello's aggression, while the Turtles sitting and letting the villains defeat themselves in the climax is less accurate.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Donatello is a victim of the use of Wu wei the most in this episode. This makes a lot of sense because he's The Smart Guy of the group, thus he relies primarily on his cunning and analytical mind, while Wu wei requires a clear head and effortless action. It makes so much sense, the 2012 show did a similar premise in "Monkey Brains" where Donatello needed to learn how to "fight without thought".
