  • Hilarious in Hindsight: "Every Breath You Take" is allegedly inspired by the Cold War, comparing the machinations between the United States and the Soviet Union to a romantic obsession. But if that is the case, then the middle lyrics might fit in the post-Cold War world where the Soviet Union is gone and America "won".
Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
    I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying, "Baby, baby, please"
  • Misaimed Fandom: "Every Breath You Take" is an infamous example, being commonly seen as a love song due to its major-key ballad sound and surface-level analysis of its lyrics. However, the song is narrated from the point of view of a Stalker with a Crush, and Sting himself was horrified by the amount of people who missed the point— it's still a common song to play at weddings to this day. Sting would later write "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" as an Answer Song, making sure to release it as his very first single as a solo artist.
