• Fandom Rivalry: With Prey 2019^note no, not the Predator film another Blumhouse production following a person of colour stranded on an island and fighting a monster, though fans of this film decry how inferior the other one is.
• Fridge Brilliance: The decision to have the creature only appear at night... until Jenn's boyfriend and friend show up. It's perfectly natural for the audience to assume what Jenn does—that this creature is nocturnal, since she's only ever seen it appear at night—and so when it snatches up her friend during the daylight, the Holy Shit Quotient is at its highest, and it's not a twist that breaks the movie; it completely subverts your expectations in a good, scary way.
• Nightmare Fuel: The first two glimpses from the monster at a distance are incredibly effective scares. The first time she sees it is after she shoots the flare and she sees it only in silhouette. The shock on her face is warranted, as the silhouette is way too clearly visible to be a trick of the light or a mirage or anything else. She knows that she sees it and that it possibly sees her. Then there's the night she's up in the hammock in the trees and she wakes during a storm. The shot is not actually focused on the monster, but then a few seconds into the scene of her looking, you see him slowly prowling on the outskirts of the treeline. It's definitely a "bring me my brown pants" moment. It's also nice that neither shot is composed like a traditional horror movie Jump Scare. The movie just lets your own fear of being alone with a monster do its job. Special mention goes to the photograph as well. The two bright dots indicating eyes in the background is pants-shittingly scary long before we actually see the damn monster.
• Paranoia Fuel: Joined with Nightmare Fuel, the thought of you being trapped on an island and while you're asleep, there is a giant shark monster prowling your tiny little island looking to tear you apart and eat you is utterly terrifying. Especially since it seems to be more active at night, but that does not stop it from stalking you in daylight either. And then there is the awful implied knowledge that it probably killed those other people that washed ashore before her. It's a wonder she is able to get any rest after she finds out it's stalking her, as those bits of knowledge alone are enough fuel for never sleeping again.
• Shocking Moments: As said above, when the creature abducts her friend and boyfriend during the day, when every other attack has been at night. It's genuinely a good twist moment.
