YMMV / Supergirl (2015) S2E16 "Star-Crossed"

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Did Kara really do what Rhea asked of her and tell Mon-El to go back home to take a second chance with his people? Or, what she so heartbroken and disgusted by his lie that she said all of that to get him away from her? The scene where she officially ends things with him may add to the latter; she just couldn't forgive him for what he did. The follow-up Flash episode confirms it's the latter.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Some viewers like how Music Meister is portrayed due to his One-Scene Wonder moment; others, especially Music Meister fans, are either disappointed or pissed about his highly unfaithful adaption. I.e., instead of being able to hypnotise people through song, this version places the target, upon meeting his eyes, into a dream state where they find themselves in the world of a musical. You don't even realize he's supposed to be an incarnation of the Music Meister until well into the Flash crossover episode this leads into. However, he does end up being a fun villain who triggers a Musical Episode with his powers.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Mon-El being the prince of Daxam was one of the most popular theories in Season 2. In fact, it was openly revealed in the episode promo two weeks earlier, with the crew clearly having given up on anyone being surprised.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Mon-El's earlier claim that he was saved by the Prince of Daxam becomes this when the real flashback reveals that his bodyguard basically abandoned and killed people—specifically, a relative of Kara's—in order to protect Mon-El and get him off Daxam safely.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Music Meister. He comes at the end of the episode, yet he manages to do the following: brag about getting himself arrested on purpose, take down Supergirl without even touching her, free himself, and escape using Cisco's device to Earth-1, all so that he could do the same thing to Barry Allen.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Mon-El becomes this, especially after meeting his parents. While it's obvious that he lied to Kara about his identity for months, he seems really ashamed about his past and his heritage. Also, he comes from a world that celebrates slavery! It's understandable that he wouldn't want people to know about that. It doesn't help that Kara basically blames him for the entire Daxam culture of partying and oppression, and acts like being a prince is something you can choose and that it gives you total control over your parents' policies and decisions. The way she treats him over hiding the fact (and why he hid it becomes obvious) seems pretty well over-the-top; she's shown less rage toward people who were attempting mass murder.
