YMMV / Summer of My German Soldier

• Heartwarming Moments: Anton telling Patty she is a person of value.
• Jerkass Woobie: Played with, with Harry. Anton overhears him rant about how no one loves him, which leads one to believe that his gruff and abusive nature is just a cover for how insecure and lonely he is.
  • Becomes a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: "And I don't love you. Nobody does!"
• Tear Jerker: Several throughout the story, but especially when Agent Pierce interrogates Patty, showing her the shirt she gave Anton stained with blood, followed by the newspaper headline that says Anton Reiker died after being shot. Patty flies into a rage at Pierce, and it goes downhill from there.
• The Woobie: Patty, though she gets some pluck by the end of the book. But between her Abusive Parents and being a complete loner who gets tried for treason and told she is an embarrassment to Jews everywhere after learning that her first love has been shot by the FBI, you just want to give this girl a hug so badly.
