YMMV / Star Trek: Discovery S1E02 "Battle at the Binary Stars"

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Considering that T'Kuvma had disengaged hostilities in order to collect the bodies of Klingons killed in the battle, the strictly moral thing for the Shenzhou crew to do would have been to let him be and attempt to restore engine power in order to get to safety. However, considering that doing so would entail the risk that he would either slaughter the Starfleet survivors or take them prisoner once he had finished that, one could interpret the episode as having a Good Is Dumb message.
  • Designated Hero: Captain Georgiou has caught a lot of criticism for having a bomb planted on a dead Klingon, knowing that T'Kuvma is going to try to formally collect and bury his casualties. This is considered a war crime under modern international conventions, note  and presumably under the Federation's "interstellar law" as well.note
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: While the marketing had made it clear that Lorca would be the show's ongoing captain, rather than Georgiou, fans were left openly wondering why it was necessary to have the latter actually killed, instead of being allowed to survive and potentially re-appear in future episode.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A few fans wished that there had been some actual discussion about the moral quandaries involved in the plans suggested by Saru and Georgiou respectively—the former effectively being a suicide bombing, and the latter booby-trapping a corpse—not least because it would have made a good contrast to Janeway's position over on Star Trek: Voyager that Starfleet officers should uphold the principles of the Federation at any cost, up to and including their own lives.
