  • And You Thought It Would Fail: The executives thought it wouldn't work simply because the family were Latino and not WASPs. The movie ended up critically and commercially succeeding, leading to future installments.
  • Critical Dissonance: The film has 93% (7.2/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, but audience scores of 45% (2.6/5). Also, on IMDb, the average rating is 5.4.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • The Tape World Monster, a scrapped Fooglie that gained internet fame when a standee of them went viral.
  • Fight Scene Failure: Carmen punches a robotic simulacrum of her brother, only to hurt her hand on its metal face. It's quite obvious her hand wasn't anywhere near it; it looks more like the robot has a force field that blocks punches.
  • First Installment Wins: This movie was the best received from the franchise.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The first scene is Alexa Vega in a white nightgown, staring out the window. The same sort of scene that happens several years later.
    • At the beginning, Juni has warts on his hands. Later on, the same actor stars in World's Greatest Dad, as a frequent masturbator. You know what they say...
    • Floop films his show in a virtual reality room that creates the backgrounds and sets for him. While not quite on the same level of tech, Industrial Light & Magic would later go on to develop and use a similar device called the Volume, which is reportedly so realistic that one crewmember during the filming of The Mandalorian thought the set was actually on fire during one scene.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: Brat is hated for picking on Juni and making fun of his idolizing of Floop and the Fooglie dolls he's acquired. Brat's father is no better either, as he actually encourages his son to "show em' who's boss!" and openly intimidates Gregorio when he tries to intervene and quickly loses courage.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The Fooglies and what they really are.
    • Don't forget their song. We're trapped! Floop is a madman, help us, save us! Floop is a madman, help us, save us!
    • If you record their dialogue elsewhere and play it backwards, it's no better. The ominous music when you see the purple one making nonsense sounds (during the scene in the car) suddenly makes sense when you know he's saying "I can't get out, I can't! Help me! He's evil! He has me trapped! Help! Somebody please help me!"
    • And this happens to their dad! He gets changed back, though.
    • It also happens to Minion, too, and that laugh before his transformation doesn't help make it less scarier.
  • Special Effects Failure: One scene involves Ingrid moving her chair over to Gregorio. The track on which her chair is on is very clearly visible. Whether this is justifiable as yet another spy gadget's visible elements is debatable. Given that there's whirring sounds when Ingrid moves on her chair, one can assume the visible track is deliberate.
  • Tear Jerker: Gregorio imagining himself trouncing a bully's parent (which he easily could) and impressing Juni. All he wants is to be his son's hero.
