YMMV / SpyBoy

Go To

  • Iron Woobie: Butch had a very crappy constant life full of abuse (whether physically or emotional) by hand of his friends (both groups), the Fleming family, every single mission they ever had and his original mother and he still kept a cheerful, upbeat personality.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Aria the Scarlet Ammo, which started four years after SpyBoy had ended, is almost exactly what it would have been if a Japanese light novel author had made an adaptation of the comic book.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some disliked the Tone Shift in Final Exam, where the series became suddenly much more serious and dramatic and less wacky and self-referencial.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Many plot points, if not the series itself, considering it got cancelled before it could receive any kind of conclusion. Even the author himself, Peter David, thought so.
"I was always frustrated with where we ended it. It didn't occur to me that they wouldn't continue the series; if I'd known, I'd never have left it on a lady-or-the-tiger cliffhanger. I remember when we did the Spyboy/Young Justice crossover. The book had already been canceled and fans read the crossover and made comments like, 'We really love this Spyboy character. How come no one's done a series with him?' That just leaves you banging your head against the wall."
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Spyboy is a sort of snapshot of late '90s/early '00s comic books, and its contemporary pop culture in general. The fashion is pure 2000 (lots of bare midriffs and visible thongs), it's self-consciously borrowing a lot from manga, and Spyboy's organization has a secret lair suspended between the Twin Towers.
