  • Harsher in Hindsight: Bowden threatens Stuckey after he made a joke towards him about masturbating in the beginning in the movie. When Bowden's actor Alan Autry became Fresno's mayor in 2000, he was a strong opponent of same-sex marriage.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Are the villagers in league with the hunters? They're not.
    • Is the truck in the end driven by more Cajun hunters? Nope, it belongs to the Guard.
  • Retroactive Recognition: One of the Cajun antagonists is Sonny Landham in a mustache, who would later be well-known six years later for his role as Badass Native Billy Sole in Predator.
    • Bowen is played by Alan Autry, under the name Carlos Brown. He later rose to prominence playing Captain V.L. "Bubba" Skinner for all eight seasons of In the Heat of the Night. Also, his character in this film becomes so shell-shocked by the ordeal that he goes mute for half the film, which will be quite a departure for audiences who saw him first as the unflappable Skinner.
    • The one-armed Cajun the soldiers take captive is Brion James, who had an extensive career playing good and bad cops, good and bad soldiers, and plenty of memorable villains.
    • Also, Poole is played by Peter Coyote. With his extensive acting resume over the years, audiences may be surprised to discover that Poole is the very first casualty, dying well before the halfway point.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: This movie has been read as a metaphor or an allegory for the Vietnam War, although Walter Hill has explicitly stated he doesn't think such a reading is valid.
That was just our story. And we were very aware that people were going to see it as a metaphor for Vietnam. The day we had the cast read, before we went into the swamps, I told everybody, "People are going to say this is about Vietnam. They can say whatever they want, but I don't want to hear another word about it".
