YMMV / South Park S 23 E 2 Band In China

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Yes, the Chinese government really did outlaw Winnie-the-Pooh due to jokes about the bear looking like Xi Jinping. Mickey even tells Randy he can look it up on the internet.
  • Americans Hate Tingle: Unsurprisingly, this episode is not well received by the more nationalistic Chinese, who accuse the creators of promoting Yellow Peril stereotypes about China under the guise of political criticism.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Randy being paid to kill someone? Not funny. Randy being hired by the Chinese government to assassinate Winnie-the-Pooh? Hilarious.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Moral Event Horizon: As if blowing up homegrown weed growers wasn't enough, Randy crosses this further when he kills Winnie-the-Pooh with garrote wire in front of Piglet.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Winnie-the-Pooh, one of Disney's most beloved icons, getting murdered is absolutely gruesome to witness and yet equally ridiculous.
  • The Woobie: Winnie-the-Pooh. He becomes a political prisoner due to the Chinese president being offended by claims that he looks like him, gets disowned by Mickey Mouse for being "offensive", and shortly afterwards is brutally murdered by Randy solely to broker a deal between him and the Chinese. Even worse? Pooh's character isn't exaggerated or subverted with dickishness like most parodies in South Park, unlike Mickey Mouse, which makes his death even more tragic.
  • Woolseyism: The French dub made a (voluntary or not) joke about Family Guy being Disney's property in the Mickey rant with the Disney Characters by having Randy quoting almost by word a phrase from the Family Guy's French opening:
Randy: Mais où sont passées nos bonnes vieilles valeurs? note
