YMMV / Soma Spirits

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Form and Dissonance compete to conquer the world of Soma and impose an order of joyful emotions or sorrowful emotions respectively. The sequel reveals that they started a world war against the Sun King in order to steal the godlike power of Absolution, with the resulting cataclysmic battle splitting the world and people into joy and sorrow halves. After Form and Dissonance each take over their own half of the world, they manipulate the spirits Heart and Soul into gathering fragments of Absolution's power, intending to corrupt the spirits into living weapons in order to destroy each other's domain and people. When Heart and Soul ruin their plans by recombining the two halves of Soma, Form and Dissonance team up and use Absolution to suck all of Soma into a void, seeking to kill the population for failing their "utopian" ideals.
  • Nightmare Fuel: In the true ending path, Quietus transforms into Absolution and darkens the screen. When Heart and Soul confront the boss, they see a pair of eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth while the rest of the face is shrouded in shadow, making this boss stand out in creepiness compared to the more cartoonish chibi aesthetic of the other enemies and bosses. Worse yet, Quietus/Absolution makes it clear that they want to drag out the boss battle just to toy with the heroes and fill them with fear and despair, meaning they could easily kill the protagonists if they felt like it. After the screen is illuminated, the boss looks like a more monstrous version of Absolution from the other routes, with tentacles, multiple eyes, and eyes on tentacles.
  • Obvious Judas: While Dissonance is openly presented as the antagonist, his sister Form is positioned as a benevolent ally and Big Good, and initially nothing seems amiss. Until she tells you that she wants a world of happiness and to only collect orbs of joy, which is already at odds with the moral of achieving balance, and when you see that doing this requires you to sacrifice the happiness of the greater society, combined with her being incredibly pushy and demanding if you disobey her- or even if you obey her- and outright encouraging you to condemn the wildlife of Freezing Fjord to die in an endless winter, it becomes increasingly hard to trust her. Sure enough, she is every bit as evil as her brother and wants to force everyone in the world to be happy against their will.
