YMMV / Slap Her... She's French

Go To

  • Hollywood Homely: Genevieve when she first arrived is seen as a dowdy foreigner who was supposed to be inferior to high school goddess Starla. Yet she's played by the stunning Piper Perabo.
  • Ho Yay: After a sleepover, Starla wakes up to see her two friends are spooning each other in their sleep.
  • Narm: During the montage where Genevieve's popularity is eclipsing Starla's, the last image is of a newspaper article that features a picture of President Bush waving while she stands next to him. Aside from the Special Effects Failure, seeing her with a big cheesy smile and apparently being so popular that she is photographed next to the president with little reason is laughable.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: While Genevieve is indeed a manipulative usurper who made Starla's life more difficult, one can relate to how painful and ultimately damaging bullying is, especially with there being more of a crackdown on trying to stop or at least curtail it (and that the bullies themselves rarely get called out on or even punished for their actions). For her, she was so embarrassed by Starla when they were children, she had to move to another country. It also helps that Starla, at her worse, is a Designated Hero.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • While the film plays the whole Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey trope for all its worth, given how much the trope has fallen out of style and France turning into one of the United States' surprisingly strongest allies makes viewing the movie today rather xenophobic.
    • Also, at one point as Genevieve has stolen all of Starla's thunder, the latter randomly insults a kid who's wearing a beret by calling it "retarded". Such a word was uneasy to use in 2002 and is seldom heard in current media.
    • Genevieve getting revenge against Starla for a stunt she pulled where she told her to lick an ice sculpture of a cow when they were children and embarrassed her so badly that she moved away gets both sides of the coin. On one hand, many sympathetize with her due to how unchallenged bullying usually is and felt her actions were cathartic. On the other hand, however, seeing the lengths that people go to to get revenge for bullying be it killing others who wronged them or killing themselves leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth about the plot (even though Genevieve's revenge was far less dramatic).
    • At one point, Granola Girl Doreen is called a "lesbo" by Starla and her Girl Posse. Such a homophobic word would have a hard time being displayed in modern audiences.
