YMMV / Silicon Docks

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: After Evan says he needs to find a bathroom, it cuts to Larry and Marissa on the top of a roof. Given that earlier in the movie, Elon and Jeff had pissed off a rooftop, it gives the impression that's what the two of them are doing as well.
  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: Mark gets annoyed when Jack buys him a coke in the off licence. Is it simply annoyance at not being given an alcoholic drink (as he's later seen with a bottle of Smirnoff Ice in the park)? Or is it a nod to the $7 billion Facebook reportedly lost in the middle of 2020 when Coca Cola pulled their advertising from social media?
  • Awesome Art: Some very nice traditional 2-D animation, with some good use of Rotoscoping for the backdrops and interesting cartoonised designs for the protagonists while still making them instantly recognisable.
  • Crazy Is Cool: Jack's sage-like persona and New-Age Retro Hippie behaviour make him quite cool and appealing, in spite of (or perhaps because of) how he appears to have a couple of screws loose compared to the others.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Mark and Evan's trade of insults on the street reaches this thanks to Mark Comically Missing the Point, and not realising Evan's use of the verb 'fuck' is metaphorical.
Evan: In reality, Evan FUCKED MARK!
    Mark: Rapist liar!
  • Funny Moments:
    • Jack is introduced meditating on the docks. Two pigeons land next to him, and he softly says "I'm not your king".
    • Reed and Susan's passive aggressive comparison contest, where Reed insinuates that Netflix will be showing things in 8K and have a button on people's remote controls etc. Susan calmly responds that YouTube has the same, with the air of trying to remember a distant relative's birthday.
Reed: Well, we have money, Susan.
Susan: Hmm...I'll have to check. But I think we might have some of that too.
    • Jack coming back from the off licence with a drink specifically for everyone. But he gives nothing to Marissa, "as a reflection of what you give me."
    • Elon and Jeff of course have to take a piss together off a rooftop (in their defence, there are no public bathrooms open due to restrictions). Space rockets are seen instead of their genitals.
    • Mark's game of one-upmanship against Evan reaches petty levels when he tries to mock him about how weird the dog filter on Snapchat is. Evan deadpans that it's not 2016 and no one uses the dog filter anymore.
    • Mark tries to deflect criticism of Facebook's misinformation problem by saying that YouTube is far worse for that, only to get interrupted by an annoyed Jack...who insists that's "my crown".
    "And heavy lies the crown."
    • During the 'drinking in the park' montage, we see that Reed is desperately texting Bono and getting no response.
  • Heartwarming Moments: It's actually rather sweet when Larry and Marissa reminisce about their first time testing out Google street view experiments. She affirms that she actually did feel good as a woman working at Google, but that's rarely printed, "because it's not the kind of story they're looking for."
  • Ho Yay:
    • Evan and Mark's constant sniping can sometimes make them feel like bitter exes with Belligerent Sexual Tension. Especially since Mark at one point thinks Evan's saying he once tried to hit on him.
    • Jeff and Elon naturally. They even engage in a friendly game of Nature Tinkling together, with the implication that they're comparing each other's rockets.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Mark may be annoying, shrill and extremely un-sympathetic if one takes into account some of the real life scandals he's been involved in. But given how he's disliked by everyone else and openly picked on, as well as the later scene where he's left alone in the rain telling Evan to stop laughing at him, it's hard not to feel a little sorry for him.
