YMMV / Shadow Warrior 3

Go To

  • Author's Saving Throw: Or an attempt at it. Shadow Warrior 3 addresses a few issues that Shadow Warrior 2 has received some flak for, such as overcomplicated Looter Shooter arsenal, Cut and Paste Environments, simplistic first person Po V cutscenes and the absence of fan favourite Hoji. However, fixing these problems created new ones, and the game is being criticized for being It's Short, So It Sucks! as well as streamlined and simplified too much. Right now it has a lower rating on Steam than Shadow Warrior 2, although more recent reviews are mostly positive, claiming that it's not like the first two, but a decent Doom Eternal clone and an enjoyable game in its own right.
  • Contested Sequel: While the criticised looter shooter aspects of Shadow Warrior 2 were excised with this game and the finisher and new movement mechanics were praised, the short length, more limited arsenal and Chi powers being limited to pushing enemies away were not received well, with some feeling the game to be very bare bones.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Oni Hanma are tough, fast, deal tons of melee damage and don't have any weaknesses. They're also the most common mini boss, appearing from the first level, and rarely come in less than 2 or 3.
    • Bunny Demons are essentially reskinned Oni Hanma but they're immune to Finishers. And while on your first playthrough you can stay safe by not killing any bunnies (which causes their big angry friends to spawn), Bunny Demons always appear on New Game+.
    • Hattori can deflect bullets, put up shields and are deadly in melee. They're one of the few mini bosses you should be saving Finisher charges for, not just because they're a pain to deal with using other methods, but also because they drop a Game-Breaker Gore Weapon.
    • Mogura Twins are between this and Goddamned Bats. They always come in pairs (and there can be more than one pair at a time) and spend most time underground, where they're not only invincible but spawn lava trails. When they pop up, there's just a small time window to damage them while they pepper Lo Wang with deadly projectiles. To add insult to the injury, they drop the worst Gore Weapon in the game, which can't even reliably damage other Moguras.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Spending Finishers only on Shokai (who appear in huge numbers in every fight and require only one Finisher charge) to receive the Brain Tonic results in huge health boost and constant healing, rendering Lo Wang all but invincible. It's a viable tactic to completely skip all other Finishers and deal with more powerful enemies using conventional weapons, taking advantage of the Brain Tonic to shrug off most damage.
    • Blade of Hattori has a homing/auto attack system, one-shots weaker foes and deals heavy damage to larger ones, instantly teleports Lo Wang to melee, and can target flying enemies. Although it has much lower duration than other Gore Weapons, grabbing one often results in clearing the current wave in seconds.
  • Goddamned Bats:
    • Seeking Shokera. There are certainly more threatening enemies to worry about, but these guys come in packs, can take a decent level of punishment, and will happily pelt you with projectiles from a distance while you're tied up with other, more-immediate threats.
    • Kugutsu, despite being the second weakest enemy in the game, can be surprisingly annoying and dangerous when spawning in large numbers. They're rather accurate and can chip off large chunks of Lo Wang's health even on the lowest difficulty.
    • Chief Oboru Guruma doesn't have a direct attack, but if left unchecked, quickly covers the area in proximity mines that are fairly difficult to evade. Luckily, they can be shot and even used to damage enemies like exploding barrels.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: Many players have criticized the game's short play time. It takes an average first-time player 5-6 hours to complete the main campaign. The game also has little replay value due to the absence of New Game Plus, harder difficulties, or multiplayer modes. However, steps are being taken to counteract this, as Hardcore difficulty was added in update 1.03, Hero Mode was added in update 1.04 and New Game Plus was added in update 1.05.
