YMMV / Sepultura

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Era: Against, Nation, and Roorback are frequently derided by fans for their Nu Metal sound. Nation in particular is the band's lowest rated album on Metal Archives by a considerably large margin, averaging only 22%.
  • Awesome Music:
    • There's a reason they're one of metal's biggest acts in the world right now. With earth-shattering albums like Beneath the Remains, Chaos A.D., Against, Dante XXI, Schizophrenia, and Roots, they simply have done it all. And who can forget the fan-favorite album Arise?
    • Their 2020 release Quadra has quickly become a fan favorite, as it contains elements from each of the band's Roadrunner Records albums.
  • Critical Dissonance: Despite having been divisive throughout its entire history aside from Quadra, the Green era releases have actually always been fairly well-received critically even during its most contested period (with Roorback in particular gaining stellar reviews despite being one of the band's most disliked albums), but you wouldn't know it from interacting with the fans. Although there were some that were significantly less acclaimed, none of the critics ever treated them with the same vitriol the fans did.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: While Green-era Sepultura is divisive, virtually everyone will agree that Eloy Casagrande is a fantastic drummer.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • The band's fanbase is called the "Sepulnation", named after the eponymous song from their 2001 release Nation.
    • The "Maximum 4"note , which refers to Sepultura's universally accepted Top 4 albums: Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D., and Roots. All four albums were released back-to-back and are all considered classics in the metal genre and are a relection of the band's prime which featured the strong synergy between Sepultura with Max Cavalera on vocals and the support of their label, Roadrunner Records.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: 90% of Sepultura fans will stop after Roots as it is the last to feature Max Cavalera on vocals. Many fans say that Max's departure is what killed Sepultura. Though their work from Dante XXI onward has managed to win back some of those fans, especially with Quadra.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: They are not very popular in Brazil. They discovered about their foreign popularity when their tour in Europe attracted more crowds than the headliner (Venom). Of particular note is their 1991 album Arise earning a gold certification in Indonesia, a nation that is (otherwise) not exactly the biggest market for metal music.
  • Growing the Beard: Schizophrenia. While Morbid Visions is considered a classic and is typically viewed as one of the first true black metal albums, the fact of the matter is that without Andreas Kisser's far greater technical ability and more sophisticated songwriting, they probably would have never gone anywhere.
  • Misattributed Song: There's a parody mostly labeled as "Sepultura ft. Luciano Pavarotti".
  • Tearjerker: Dead Embryonic Cell's lyrics are very sad, cynical and pessimistic.
  • Win Back the Crowd:
    • Dante XXI was credited with restoring the band's reputation after a string of mediocre albums. Since then, they have slowly built their fanbase back up.
    • Quadra ended up winning back even more fans as it's considered by many to be Sepultura's best album since Max's departure. Especially so given that it's more likely than not their final release.
