  • Expy: Katie has a lot in common with the titular character of Scott Pilgrim in that they both have a hard time accepting the consequences of their failures, personal or otherwise. The difference is that Scott's still kind of a bum and Katie's at least a talented chef and successful restauranteur, even if she doesn't completely have her shit together.
  • Narm: The novel's nature as a serious dramatic tale about love and relationships would be a little easier to swallow if Katie didn't have a hairdo that looks it came straight out of a third-rate Shōnen series.
  • Reality Subtext: Katie's trying to deal with a long-term relationship ending and stress over opening a second restaurant. During production of the graphic novel, Bryan O'Malley divorced his wife (fellow comic artist Hope Larson) and was trying to make his next move after ending the successful Scott Pilgrim series. Knowing both of these things, it's not hard to see the parallels.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Considering the story's themes of accepting the consequences of one's actions and moving on, Be Careful What You Wish For, and the implication that her ex had somewhat of a dark side that never amounted to much, the protagonist being back together with him in the end comes across as slightly undermining the premise of the story.
