  • Jim Cornette selling the video library and taking a full time WWF job to pay off the debt.^note These were two separate things that happened years apart, when SMW closed Cornette wasn't even possession of the full video library (and had already been working for the WWF in some capacity for over 2 years), in fact the production company was his biggest creditor and were holding the footage until the debt was paid. He didn't actually sell it outright until the mid 00s. By the time he was done with WWE, the pro wrestling industry was in such a state Smoky Mountain's debt would have been paid off just by getting a television deal since the options for a quality local product diminished so significantly. And two of the reasons for that state, ECW went under seven million in the hole, making Smoky Mountain's debt look non existent by comparison, to say nothing of WCW's hemorrhages.
• Spiritual Predecessor
  • Smoky Mountain need of money and desiring attention of television companies, WCW in need of new stars and angles, began to work together, with not only WCW taking stars from Smoky Mountain but a Smoky Mountain invasion angle being teased. Instead, Jim Cornette's anti WCW rant was edited out of WCW television and the invasion angle ended up being transferred to the outsiders who became the nWo a year after Smoky Mountain closed. Furthermore, a year after Smoky Mountain closed, the Heartland Wrestling Association opened up and started farming talent into WCW.
  • Ohio Valley Wrestling, which started in 1997 was bought out from the National Wrestling Alliance (WWF/E agreed to cover 30% of its operating expenses) and eventually came under the ownership of Jim Cornette, operating as a farm league to both WWE and TNA.
