YMMV / Rick and Morty S3 E7: "The Ricklantis Mix-up"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Campaign Manager Morty, who was already bitter about being fired, gets this information-leak from a Rick of unknown origins, who gained this information through unknown means. It's possible that the Rick who leaked him this information was working for Evil Morty, and the information was given to Campaign Manager Morty specifically because he'd be more likely to violently act on his personal vendetta in a way that benefits Evil Morty's plan. Mortys are often prone to letting their anger cloud their judgment, and Evil Morty would know this well.
    • Did Factory Worker Rick know about the blender dimension trap before he pushed Sample Rick into the portal, as his dialogue implies, or was he unaware, as his shocked expression implies? Of course, it's also possible that he was expecting some sort of trap, but expected it to be non-lethal, like a police ambush.
    • Did Candidate Morty narrowly win the election in a surprise upset? Or did the Secret Council rig the election to let him win and install him as a figurehead as a way of keeping control despite the social upheavals caused by previous events affecting the Citadel, namely the influx of Rickless Morties, the widespread destruction caused by the Tele-Frag with the Federation prison, and the death of the Council of Ricks?
    • Did Cop Morty really think Cop Rick would lower his guard, especially after echoing the lesson Cop Morty imparted after the last time he did so and paid for it, or was he committing Suicide by Cop just so he wouldn't go to jail for his corruption?
  • Fan Nickname: Just about every Rick or Morty in this episode doesn't have an official name, so the names seen on the trope page are their identifiers by the fans.
  • Fridge Horror: Was Simple Rick shot and abducted right in front of Little Beth on her birthday?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Cop Morty makes an offhand remark about the Morties in Mortytown having no families and being raised to be sidekicks. One could take that as metaphorical as Ricks would likely go around exploitatively raising Morties for their own ends, and likely get their real families killed in the process, only for the Season 5 finale to reveal that this is literal, as they are cloned en masse, have their upbringing implanted into them, and sent to various Morty-less Ricks.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Thanks to his general cool, his amazing competence, his intelligence, him having a point, and the fact that his victims in this episode are horrible people, or in the case of Campaign Manager Morty, idiots, many root for Evil Morty. It helps that he's the only person that actually makes positive change in the Citadel, honoring his campaign promises on the surface.
  • Win Back the Crowd: After the backlash over the first half of season three, "Ricklantis Mixup" brought back fan favorite villain Evil Morty and featured major lore drop/myth arc advancement of the Citadel and evil Morty storylines
