YMMV / Rick and Morty S3 E1: "The Rickshank Redemption"

Go To

  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Beth and Jerry's relationship definitely qualifies for this trope when they get back together during the season 3 finale.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In Rick's rant to Morty, he mentions he'll never go in adventures with Jerry. This would end up going differently as he does go in an adventure with him in "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy"
  • Memetic Mutation: The Szechuan sauce, to the point where even McDonald's itself got into the joke on their Twitter account and brought it back, which eventually led to uproar.
McDonald's twitter: "McNugga Lubba Dub Dub!"
  • Misaimed Fandom: Rick's infamous McDonald's Szechuan sauce obsession was not just some arbitrary bit of nostalgia that Roiland and Harmon threw in for fun. It was to prove that Rick is so petty that he'll risk the well-being of literally everyone else, from a galactic empire to his own immediate family, for what amounts to nothing. The fact that several fans rioted at the McDonald's restaurants who didn't anticipate the Demand Overload when they brought the sauce back for a limited time, all because they saw it in a TV show, only proves the episode's point.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Sure, Jerry had every reason to want to turn Rick in, and Rick destroying Jerry's marriage as petty revenge was a dick move, but Rick was ultimately proven right about the Galactic Federation turning Earth into a Police State, something Jerry was willing to do if it meant getting rid of Rick. Plus, after seeing how toxic Jerry and Beth are for one another you could argue that Rick was practically doing them a favor.
  • Tough Act to Follow: This is easily considered one of the show's best episodes... which set expectations high, to the point that the rest of the season, with the exceptions of "Pickle Rick" and "The Ricklantis Mix-Up", looks So Okay, It's Average by comparison.
