YMMV / Revenge R Us

Go To

  • Ending Fatigue: It's almost universally agreed upon the book should've ended with Wade getting her revenge on Micah, feeling the last minute twist wherein she's turned into a frog alongside her brother was unnecessary and punishes her for no reason.
  • Karmic Overkill: The ending features Wade getting turned into a frog after she tries to curse Iris as revenge for stringing her along on Micah's orders, only for Iris to then suddenly reveal a rule about Maggie's power only being used three times a day without consequences. It tries to read as if this is punishment on Wade for not being the bigger person, despite the sheer amount of torture she suffered thanks to Micah and Iris throughout the whole book (alongside the abuse Micah's put her through her whole life) on top of the twist about how often Maggie's magic can be used coming out of absolutely nowhere just before the book ends.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Micah's abuse of Wade goes far beyond the realm of young adult horror when he crosses the line into outright physical abuse and borderline sexual harassment. His obsession with hurting and humiliating his sister every chance he gets far outweighs the magic elements of the story when Wade's revenge spells backfire.
  • Squick:
    • Micah's Establishing Character Moment has him walking into the living room with Wade's underwear on his head, which he then immediately escalates to trying to tear off her pants.
    • The graphic descriptions of Wade's intense itching, especially when she begins itching herself so bad, that she begins to bleed.
    • Micah taking photos of Wade in her underwear while she is asleep. What makes this even more Squick-y is that he's a year away from becoming an adult and Wade is only 12.
  • Trans Audience Interpretation: There's a theory that, based on her first name, Wade is really transgender and the reason why a lot of Micah's abuse revolves around trying to make people see her in her underwear in an effort to humiliate her is because he's deliberately misgendering her.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Because she keeps going to Iris to inflict more reprisal on her brother after each and every one of them continue to backfire on her instead of just simply cutting her losses, Wade gradually starts losing sympathy due to her idiocy and inability to learn from her mistakes. That said, part of the reason she keeps going back to Iris is because she needs to in order to undo the magic. Wade only went really went back to Iris twice. The fact that Micah was paying Iris the entire time makes it likely Iris was subtly pushing Wade to keep pursuing revenge so she'd be giving Micah his money's worth.
  • Values Dissonance: Micah taking pictures of his underage sister would definitely have him be more than just a Jerkass in present day. He'd be considered a pedophile and be accused of child pornography.
