  • Awesome Music: Hardline's hard rock anthem "I'll Be There", which was used in the trailer and in the closing credits.
  • He Really Can Act: In addition to his excellent martial arts skills, Brandon Lee showcases his immaculate comedic timing, the ability to convey many varied emotions with his face and body language, and to carry a genuinely heartfelt emotional moment (see Tear Jerker below) without giving in to Narm and all with his natural charisma and screen presence. Watching this film years after his premature death just underscores what a massive loss it was.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Al Leong as Minh, who is the only opponent to match Jake in a fight and comes close to killing him. Their fight scene is widely regarded as a high point of the film due to the actors' legitimate martial arts skills and the excellent choreography which allowed the camera to stay on them and use wide shots and long takes to let the action play out.
  • Playing Against Type: Powers Boothe, who was typically cast as villains, here playing a grizzled good cop who teams up with Jake.
  • Tear Jerker: Jake spends a lot of the film decrying his father's idealism and saying this is what got him killed. Near the end of the movie, he finally breaks down and tearfully confesses to Karla that he's angry at his father because he still loves and misses him. It's a very emotional moment, and the likely Reality Subtext doesn't help matters one bit.
