YMMV / Power Instinct

Go To

  • Even Better Sequel: 2 is essentially stated to be where the series took off and started to stand out more from the pack of Street Fighter imitators. Ironic for a game that was parodying said series who likewise was more renowned for it's sequel than it's first incarnation. Go fig.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Legends and Matrimelee were called Gogetsuji Legends and just Matrimelee in the US, but most fans use the Power Instinct prefix when referring to them for the sake of consistency. Also, Matsuri Senzo Kuyou is called as Power Instinct 5.
    • The blue-ish aura that surrounds a character when they gain a level in their power bar is called "Stress Flame" by fans because said power bar is known as the "Stress Meter". Since Legends, every character (or almost everyone) has one or two special moves that become stronger if performed while dashing or right after a dashing attack, those have been nicknamed "Shadow Attacks".
  • Memetic Mutation: Let's Go! Onmyoji has become popular on Nico Nico Douga. It's also kind of an ear worm.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Otane suddenly barging in to take over as the final boss in the second game, while the camera focuses on her exaggeratedly wrinkly face.
  • Older Than They Think: Annie's super throw is similar to that of Gonzales from Global Champion.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • Reiji's theme song is an obvious parody of the Segata Sanshiro theme song.
    • The song It's the Little Things that Make Me Happy from Matrimelee sounds a lot like the same lyrical and musical style used by the Japanese folk singer Hako Yamasaki and her legendary style of dramatical screaming when singing, more accurately in her song Nostalgia, as you can hear right here.
  • That One Boss: Even when they're normal/not-boss characters, Goketsuji sisters are very tough opponents to fight against. Especially Otane in the first game and Oume in the second one.
