YMMV / Pokémon False Red

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is Fire really just a kid who is being unfairly mistreated just because he happens to look like Red? Is he even human? Why did he replace Red, if at all? Is he truly a jerk who's maliciously copying the region's lost hero and mocking their grief just as they believe is the case? Is Fire really Red but with everyone forgetting what he looked like?
  • Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: The gameplay elements are completely unchanged from Pokémon FireRed; the story, on the other hand, is much more complex.
  • Fridge Horror: All of Kanto is viciously emotionally and verbally abusing an eleven-year old just for looking and acting like their lost champion.
    • Especially if you play as Leaf. It starts out as completely hilarious, until you realize that everyone is emotionally attacking an eleven-year-old… just because.
    • Do Fire/Leaf even have parents? Did they just randomly wake up in someone else's house? Is Red's mother their mother and she stopped recognizing them?
  • Fridge Logic:
    • How do people know Fire isn't Red?
      • Green mentions that looking at Fire up close, he doesn't actually look like Red.
    • If Red's journey has already happened, then why does Blue not have the Pokémon he used to become the Champion? If Blue seriously wants rid of Fire, then there is no reason not to use a team that outlevels Fire by the dozens.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • The game is so depressing that getting the running shoes from Red's mom and getting the S.S. Anne ticket from Bill are great acts of kindness against the many people who are cruel and belittle Fire/Leaf.
    • The Sevii Islands: No one knows who Red is and treat Fire/Leaf like a normal kid.
  • Narm: The story was written with the assumption that you're playing as Fire. If you play as Leaf it becomes a long string of crossdressing allusions and Captain Obvious moments.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Not to an obvious degree as with most Creepypastas, but still legitimately creepy due to the overall uncomfortable atmosphere and the very ambiguous situation regarding Fire.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Given how everyone thinks Fire replaced Red and hate him for it, one would think this game is connected to the Glitchy Red creepypasta, and expect Glitchy Red to appear as the True Final Boss, out for Fire's blood for trying to replace him. However, as stated at They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot below, this doesn't happen.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: There was a lot of hints that the final destination would have been Mount Silver and something was spamming the "Come Home" message everywhere. Green and Giovanni independently stated that the sequence of events has happened before, and somehow it was repeating itself down to the last detail. It instead broke the Fourth Wall and had Green and Professor Oak refuse to play along anymore.
  • The Woobie:
    • Fire/Leaf, being hated and mistreated for simply looking a little like Kanto's fallen hero. Maybe.
    • Red's mother. One of the few people who doesn't hate Fire on sight, all that concerns her is that her son is missing and she wants him to come home.
