- Common Knowledge: It's a common misconception that Chelsea was named directly after the same person from Jonathan's childhood, when in fact it was a name chosen to substitute for her real one much like most of the other characters.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Korgar became unexpectedly popular with readers during the earlier days of the comic due to his over-the-top nature with his student, to the point Jonathan considered doing a spinoff comic series wherein Korgar would teach math to the reader using his unorthodox methods, after a friend in one of his art classes at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) suggested it. Sadly, this never materialized.
- Moral Event Horizon: Chelsea causing Whitney a severe allergic reaction and then blaming Peter for it was seen as an irredeemable action by many readers of the comic.
- The Scrappy: Jake, a Designated Love Interest for Whitney who was introduced in strip #233, was immediately hated by the fans on arrival for the fact that he almost cost Peter his chance at love.
- Tear Jerker:
- Early in the comic Seth gets a letter that Steven Wright, a child from a Dysfunctional Family that he watched over, took his own life. It's a sobering reminder that both a guardian can only do so much to help a person and that ultimately, no matter how much help one gets, some inner demons are just too strong for a person to put to rest.
- The "death" of Pearl, Chelsea's pet rabbit. Chelsea is frantically searching, only for her to eventually give up as she presumes she ran off and died in the snow. Mixed with heartwarming in that Pearl was actually Persephoni in disguise, and although Pearl is "gone", she still has her in some form as a friend in Chloe.
