YMMV / Peter and Company

Go To

The Original Comic

  • Protagonist Title Fallacy: In spite of it being called "Peter and Company", the comic tends to focus on alot of other characters more than Peter himself, with the very first strip of this comic presenting Betsy and Chelsea.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Despite the lack of story or direction with the comic, what seems to draw readers to the original comic is exactly that. Combined with the fact that it showcases many characters and subplots that the reboot would later take inspiration from, it tends to be a fascinating read in spite of the author's disdain for it.

The 2005 Reboot

  • Angst? What Angst?: Despite that Chelsea almost killed her through a perfume allergy at her birthday, Whitney holds little to no disdain for Chelsea and acts as if nothing ever happened.
  • Ass Pull:
    • Chelsea's reveal to have had no family comes off as a sudden and rushed attempt for many to garner sympathy for Chelsea after she sabotaged Peter's gift to Whitney and sent her to the Hospital.
    • The sudden discovery that Whitney had a boyfriend named Jake came out of left field for audiences and was seen as an unnecessary curve ball and a flimsy attempt at an obstacle for Peter.
  • Common Knowledge: It's a common misconception that Chelsea was named directly after the same person from Jon's childhood, when infact it was a name chosen to substitute for her real one much like most of the other characters.
  • Designated Villain: The school counselor in strips 71-74 was written in such a way that he was meant to be seen as an antagonist to Peter, but only on account of the fact that he criticizes Peter. It becomes hard to see them as a villain given that they repeatedly try to help Peter make friends and just mesh better with the kids around him.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Persephoni (who would later become Chloe) quickly gained popularity, especially with outside audiences, for outright being a mentor and protector to Chelsea as opposed to Seth’s rather sarcastic and unhelpful ways with Peter in the beginning and is frequently praised for being the Only Sane Woman given how frequently she calls out Peter on his behavior and always goes out of his way to protect Chelsea and even Ezzy from time to time.
    • Korgar became unexpectedly popular with readers during the earlier days of the comic due to his over-the-top nature with his student, to the point Jon almost considered making the comic about him on account of one of his readers wanting him to be focused on.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Chelsea causing Whitney a severe allergic reaction and then blaming Peter for it was seen as an irredeemable action by many readers of the comic.
  • Never Live It Down: Chelsea is frequently remembered for the time she almost caused Whitney to die through a Birthday gift sabotage involving a perfume she was severely allergic to and is constantly condemned for it and remembered to be a bully amongst fans despite her slowly becoming nicer as her story with Persophoni unfolds.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: Whitney's introduction into the comic would eventually begin the subplot where Peter finds his crush, and from that point on started to become less about the author's childhood and more about Peter's infatuation with Whitney, often drawing out his shyness which involved with pointless arcs being thrown in for the sake of making obstacles.
  • The Scrappy:
  • Strawman Has a Point: The school counselor, a character that briefly appeared in the comic, is meant to be seen as judgmental and persecutional towards Peter for gathering testimonies from other students and calling out his lack of friends and weird habits. Some, however, point out that the counselor was only doing the job that they were hired to do given the kind of school Peter was in, and that he gave Peter legitimately helpful advice that in truth he should have listened to at the time.
  • Tear Jerker:
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Chelsea is meant to be a major antagonist and a bully to Peter, especially in the later chapters after Whitney's entrance in the comic, but she tends to come off as rather sensible compared to Peter, and given she was his target out of boredom it makes her disdain for Peter seem more justified to an extent. Add onto the fact that this was a real person and, after Whitney's intro, Chelsea demonstrated sudden changes with her negative traits becoming exaggerated under the excuse that she was a bully in real life, many critics and detractors of the comic felt she was portrayed poorly and that being written as a Hate Sink and a Stalker with a Crush in the comic was unfair and in poor-taste.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Peter is meant to be seen as a woobie and Bully Magnet whom is being judged and persecuted by everyone simply for talking to Seth, his guardian, and not having any real friends, but he tends to come off as a self-pitying and petulant brat who makes himself unlikable in that he rejects any actual attempts at help and advice he gets. It doesn't help that he frequently creates trouble for himself and likes to imagine enacting violence against those who says things he feels is putting him down or call out that fact that he is indeed talking to himself.
