YMMV / Peter Pan (1924)

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Ship Tease between Peter and Tiger Lily, since Peter is played by a girl. Anna May Wong (who plays Tiger Lily) would later be surrounded by rumors that she was in a same sex relationship with Marlene Dietrich.
  • Older Than They Think: Predates the Disney version in portraying Tinkerbell as a tiny woman, played here by Virginia Brown Faire. She was represented only as a spot of light in the stage version.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Esther Ralston would achieve her Star-Making Role two years later in The American Venus, and was an iconic star of the Silent Era and early talkies too.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • As on the stage, Nana is played by a human in a dog suit.
    • Before Peter's shadow is sewn back on, no effort is made to hide the fact that he already has a shadow.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Considered one of the quintessential adaptations of Peter Pan. The Disney version, while mostly beloved, has some problematic aspects that have tainted its reputation somewhat and Hook is very divisive. Only the 2003 film is considered on equal footing.
  • Values Dissonance: A minor detail in the film: Mr. Darling gives John a smack on the face when the boy teases him for not taking his medicine.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The flying and Tinkerbell effects stand up surprisingly well.
