YMMV / Persona (1966)

Go To

  • Award Snub: It was Sweden's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, but wasn't nominated.
  • Epileptic Trees: This is one of the most thoroughly analyzed films of all-time, and no two people seem to come away with the same interpretation. Themes of identity, Split Personality, motherhood, sex, homoeroticism and art all figure into discussions of the film. Elisabet as a vampire (figuratively and literally) has also been discussed.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Gunnar Björnstrand as Elisabet's husband.
  • Values Dissonance: Alma's confession of having sex with underage boys would have been seen as risque and libertine at the time of the film's release; however, with the present-day understanding of the power dynamics involved, her actions would be seen as far more monstrous.
