YMMV / 1Q84

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Ushikawa is an unlikable character who works for the Big Bad, but it's hard not to feel pity for him as he thinks of his daughters while being suffocated to death by Tamaru.
  • Fandom Berserk Button:
    • The title has been mispronounced as "Q-Teen Eighty Four".
    • As well as "IQ Eighty Four".
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Book 2 ends with Aomame sticking a loaded gun in her mouth. Less blatant in the original since the three books were published separately, but played straight in the English release.
  • Les Yay: It's made clear that Aomame had sex with her friend Tamaki when they were teenagers, and she also was extremely close with Ayumi. Ayumi mentioned that they were "Playing lesbians" when they were drunk and when they sleep in the same bed, the first thing she does is try to have sex with Aomame (who gently rebuffs her). Given that she later regrets rebuffing her, may cross into Bi the Way territory.
  • Values Dissonance: On gun control. To elaborate, Tamaru getting a handgun for Aomame is a big deal and quite risky and it shows how much they trust each other, because she could get arrested for owning a gun and he for providing it to her. This might seem very odd to American readers, who live in a country that has some of the most lax gun laws in the world while Japan has the very strictest gun laws in the world.
