YMMV / One Night in Miami...

Go To

  • Award Snub: The film was omitted from the Best Picture lineup, and Regina King's direction got left out. Leslie Odom Jr. managed to get an acting nomination, note  but the other three principle actors didn't join him. And then Odom and Sam Ashworth lost Original Song at both the Globes and the Oscars despite being considered the frontrunner.
  • Awesome Ego:
    • Played with by Cassius. He's incredibly cocky and loves to brag, but he's more than able to back it up. He also truly cares about his friends and freely calls Jim "the strongest man in the world."
    • The other men are much subtler versions. They're all quite self assured in their abilities, but how can you blame them when they were undeniably amongst the best of what they do?
  • Awesome Music: Several of Sam Cooke's songs are on display here, and Leslie Odom Jr. absolutely nails them, especially "A Change is Gonna Come" in the final scene. Additionally, Odom and Sam Ashworth created the powerful and thrilling new song "Speak Now" for this film, also featuring Odom's excellent vocals.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Beau Bridges in the opening scene as Jim Brown's old neighbor, Mr Carlton, who is sincerely kind, respectful and paternal to Jim and yet still won't allow him or any other black person in his house. It's a scene which sums up how the four men were viewed at the time, that their numerous achievements didn't change that they were still seen as second-class citizens even by those who admired them, and Bridges captures the balance between genuine paternal kindness and racism with no indication that he even sees the two as conflicting with each other perfectly.
