  • Award Snub: While 1999 had no shortage of great, accolade-deserving films, many fans think that if the movie had come out later in the year than February it might have at least gotten a nomination for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, or Best Supporting Actor (Chris Cooper) instead of coming up empty.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Ike Bykovsky, the machine shop worker who is the first person to help the Rocket Boys, and Valentine, the Nice Girl with a crush on Homer. Between them, they probably have less than twenty minutes of screentime, but they got the top two spots on a Ranker poll at one point.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The reveal that Cool Teacher Ms. Riley has Hodgkin's Disease.
    • The death of Ike (who gave them the supplies to build the first rocket) dying in a mining accident, with Homer feeling responsible.
    • Even worse, Homer's father is critically injured in the same accident. In order to support his family he chooses to quit school and work in the mine, leading Ms. Riley to temporarily quit speaking to him. In truly heartbreaking moment, a dejected looking Homer stares through the roof grating of the mine elevator and sees Sputnik traveling in the predawn sky, before he descends into darkness...
