• Alternative Character Interpretation:
  • It can be argued that AJ is an Unreliable Narrator, and the teachers at his school aren't actually as weird as he claims.
    • If the teachers really are as wacky as AJ claims they are, is this their natural behavior or is it an act to get kids to find their lessons more interesting?
• Base-Breaking Character:
  • AJ himself. Some see him as an Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist who goes too far when he's being rude or mean towards his classmates. Others see him as a funny and enjoyable kid thanks to his ditzy one-liners and tendency to make things interesting.
  • Ryan and Michael are either toxic friends who AJ should get away from or entertaining goofballs that are more behaved than AJ.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: Teachers like Dr. Brad, Mrs. Roopy, Mrs. Yonkers, and more are seen as quirky and entertaining.
• Foe Yay Shipping: In-Universe. Ryan and Michael tease AJ for coming in contact with Andrea in almost every book. (i.e Being paired together, forced to hold hands, etc.)
• Moe: Emily is the cutest of the kids, being a kind-hearted Shrinking Violet who hates to see any discomfort happen around and to her.
• Unintentionally Sympathetic: Andrea can be overly bossy, but you can't help but feel bad for her when AJ performs acts of rudeness towards her, such as drawing a mean picture of her in her dictionary and trying to stop her from solving a class problem out of pettiness. Andrea doesn't even provoke AJ in those instances, making the latter come off as looking bad to the readers.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: AJ can fall into this a majority of the time. While it's understandable for kids to not enjoy school sometimes, AJ has no excuse for how disrespectful he acts towards the teachers and students. Even when the students aren't being mean to him, AJ will take every opportunity to insult them just for fun.
• The Woobie: Emily. Despite being the kindest character in the whole series, she's put through a lot of slapstick (getting head in the head with a pinata stick, being shown in her underwear after her Halloween costume rips off, etc), gets scared easily, and is usually made fun of by others (especially AJ). Her Prone to Tears habits may likely be caused by what she goes through on a daily basis.
