- Accidental Aesop: Some people don't like being seen as scary and just because you find being scared fun doesn't mean people want to be scary.
- Adorkable: Luna's determination to try to get along with the ponies despite being out of touch with modern society just makes her all the cuter.
- Alternate Aesop Interpretation: Turn your weakness into a strength.
- Base-Breaking Character:
- Pipsqueak. Some fans think he's adorable, and others think he's annoying.
- Pinkie's reception in this episode is divided. Her pretending to be scared of Luna act is seen as either getting into the spirit of things or just plain mean.
- Broken Base: While not as divisive as other episodes (it's of the highest rated episodes by Hasbro), either this episode was the best episode for Luna or the worst thing about her.
- Fountain of Memes: Being an Ensemble Dark Horse, practically everything Luna said or did in this episode went on to become a meme. "The fun has been doubled!", CANTERLOCK, and "THY PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT HATH ARRIVED" are prominent examples from many.
- Genius Bonus: Zecora is dressed as an enchantress/storyteller with spiders in her hair. In African folklore, stories are the domain of Anansi the Spider.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- One of the most popular fanfics over the season break was Fallout: Equestria, where the protagonist is named "Littlepip". This episode introduces a new character named Pipsqueak and Zecora at one point calls him "Little Pip". This isn't a Shout-Out due to Production Lead Time (and the writers aren't allowed to read fanfics anyways). The coincidence hasn't escaped some fans, though.
- Similarly, one fanfic written early on in the series' run featured Luna having trouble adjusting to the modern age.
- There's also this line from Progress, which ended up being surprisingly accurate to the canon Luna's personality, and came complete with Dramatic Thunder:
- Another has Zecora narrating the story of Nightmare Moon.
- And yet another has Luna confusing the heck out of other ponies with Antiquated Linguistics.
- Even though she was pretending to be scared, the fact that Pinkie was scared of Luna (especially "thinking" she'll eat her) is EXTREMELY funny considering a certain fanfic.
- There's a 1986 single called "Scary But Fun."
- Suspiciously Similar Song:
- Twilight's intro is played against a variation on "In the Hall of the Mountain King". It is later heard intermittently throughout the episode with slight changes.
- The music playing when they arrive at the festival sounds like the theme from The Munsters.
- Luna's grand entrance is accompanied by strains of John Williams' "Imperial March".
- The Woobie:
- Luna. The poor girl tries, but due to a lot of different things, she keeps making things worse and worse. Who can blame her for finally getting completely fed up with everypony treating her like a monster?
- Fluttershy. When Luna's standing over her, loudly demanding advice, all Fluttershy can do is meekly agree while looking like she wishes she could melt into the ground.
