YMMV: My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 2 E 4 Luna Eclipsed

  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation:
    • It's no use trying to change or get rid of a negative reputation - some people will keep spreading it, even though they know it's not true. Instead, you should play to everyone's expectations of you, let them define who you are (at least in public), and generally go along with the herd. You do want to be liked and accepted, don't you?
    • Turn your weakness into a strength.
  • Base Breaker:
    • Pipsqueak. Some fans think he's adorable, and others think he's a Creator's Pet in the making.
    • Luna's portrayal in this episode didn't sit too well with some fans.
    • Pinkie's reception in this episode is divided. Her pretend to be scared of Luna act is seen as either getting into the spirit of things, or just being plain mean.
  • Broken Base: While not as divisive as other episodes (it's of the highest rated episodes by Hasbro), either this episode was the best episode for Luna or the worst thing about her.
  • Fountain of Memes: Being an Ensemble Darkhorse, practically everything Luna said or did in this episode went on to become a meme. "The fun has been doubled!", CANTERLOCK, and "THY PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT HATH ARRIVED" are prominent examples from many.
  • Genius Bonus: Zecora is dressed as an enchantress/storyteller with spiders in her hair. In African folklore, stories are the domain of Anansi the Spider.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • The Scrappy: PINKIE PIE. Not once, not twice, but three times she inadvertently wrecked Luna's slowly trying earn the trust of Ponyville's citizens. Even though she later explained that she was acting all along, it didn't stop many of the older viewers to exclaim at the time "Pinkie, you're not helping the situation."
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • Twilight's intro is played against a variation on "In the Hall of the Mountain King". It is later heard intermittently throughout the episode with slight changes.
    • The music playing when they arrive at the festival sounds like the theme from The Munsters.
    • Luna's grand entrance is accompanied by strains of John Williams' "Imperial March".
  • The Woobie:
    • Luna. The poor girl tries, but due to a lot of different things, she keeps making things worse and worse. Who can blame her for finally getting completely fed up with everypony treating her like a monster?
    • Fluttershy. When Luna's standing over her, loudly demanding advice, all Fluttershy can do is meekly agree while looking like she wishes she could melt into the ground.
