YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (IDW) Issue 1 to 4

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: The Cutie Mark Crusaders don't seem to think being fillynapped by a monstrous Queen is a big deal. Also Fluttershy is gleefully fascinated by two creatures fighting over the right to eat her and her friends.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Chrysalis gets taken down surprisingly easy, all things considered. Though as stated on the main page, it was a combination of a comet and Chrysalis's own misjudgment of Twilight's power that winds up costing her.
  • Continuity Lockout: The comics already assume you know who all these characters are and the motive of the main villain. So newcomers who aren't familiar with the TV Series will be a little lost here.
  • First Installment Wins: This story arc had better reception and higher sales then any subsequent issues. Some even go as far as to argue it’s the only one they’d consider canon.
  • Franchise Original Sin: Being Darker and Edgier then the show caused some Broken Base over if this was a good thing or not, with most fans liking it. Future issues relying on increasingly criticized methods to enable drama has led to a decline in quality that its Lighter and Softer stories and spin-offs have largely avoided.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This Comic Arc which was started in November 2012 more or less predicted the Season 6 Finale (four years later) with fairly good accuracy.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Fluttershy's "Nature is so fascinating" line from Issue #3 has picked up a lot of mileage. The circular panel with her has been also used to create "Bad Advice Fluttershy" macros.
    • Pinkie's reaction to opening the door with the giant eyeball in #4 (replacing the eyeball with anything else)
  • Ugly Cute: Jim the Cave Troll. Sure he's a hulking brute who could easily crush a pony if he wanted to, but he's so innocent and carefree it's hard not to see him as anything other than the softie he really is. And he genuinely did love the Mane Six's company.
