YMMV / Murder House

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: At one point, the stairwell area is bathed in red light and you're locked out of the save room. If you go upstairs, a gate slams behind you and a Giant Spider appears in the hallway, but if you race around the corner, the spider vanishes and the lighting returns to normal. Nothing is ever made of this.
    • It may be a shoutout to the indie horror game Mr. Hopp's Playhouse, starring a killer rabbit toy, where you can also briefly and inexplicably encounter a giant spider-rabbit.
  • Complete Monster: In the novelization by Regina Watts, Thomas "Tom" Smith, also known as the Easter Ripper, was a manipulative kid who constantly got his twin brother Anthony in trouble. Tom started to kidnap, torture, and murder young children while he posed as a mall Easter Bunny performer, barely feeding the kids and making them cut themselves with razor blades hidden in food. Tom proceeded to imprison his mother and Anthony, killing his mom before he gets the police to arrest Anthony and have him executed. Feeling the urge to murder again, Tom slowly and brutally murders all of his co-workers, including an innocent salesman, and attempts to do the same to the meek Emma, implying to have plans to rape her, while boasting sadistically about his infamy.
  • Event-Obscuring Camera: The shotgun you need to defeat the Easter Ripper in the final fight is never clearly shown in camera view when you're running around being chased by him. At best you'll only see it glinting in the background from a distant angle when you're far away from it. In fact the only reason you'd even know it was there was if you spotted it early at the beginning of the game when exploring the backyard and seeing it from the other side of the greenhouse glass.
  • Fridge Brilliance: As abrupt as the ending is, its atleast thematic; Easter Sunday was originally the celebration of Christ's resurrection after sacrificing himself to grant salvation to mankind. In the end, Emma is saved after the victims of her attacker return from the dead to save her and avenge themselves
  • Narm: As the Easter Ripper explains his reasoning as to why he killed, you're treated to a rant that is likely supposed to be quite scary. Except, the voice actor overenunciates certain words, rushes over other words and ends it up being funnier than it should be. YouTuber CoryxKenshin points it out in his playthrough of the game.
The Easter Ripper: I THOUGHT I couldcontroltheurgetokill but it's BACK...and now I'm going to KILL YOUUUUU.
    Cory: What are you, rapping?
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Easter Ripper himself. A serial killer that targeted children, his M.O. was to kidnap children from the local mall, bring them back to his house, lock them up in one of the hidden rooms under the house, torture them, then release them into his greenhouse to go on a deadly Easter egg hunt where he would ultimately murder them.
    • The Easter Ripper's dungeon, filled with the skeletons of the children he kidnapped, tortured and starved. Examining some of them will reveal that many of them froze to death. One of the skeletons is even that of an infant that starved to death.
    • There are sexual elements in the area make it even worse. Many of the skeletons are in sexual positions and there's a rack of torture devices hanging on the wall near the cells that include sex toys.
    • There's a note that Emma can read that reveal that the Easter Ripper would feed his starving prisoners chocolate eggs with razor blades hidden in them, as nothing more than a cruel joke.
    • Eagle-eyed players can see the Ripper stalking Justin through the dark mall as the poor boy looks for an exit, namely peering at him over the wall as he explores the photography set and briefly appearing from a shadowy corner of one of the closed stores.
