YMMV / Mr. Holmes

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Unlike most recent adaptations, Ian McKellen's Holmes is kinder, more human and more patient. The old insensitivity is still present, though, and some of his attitude is suggested to be Character Development; Holmes explains that, rather than having no emotions or social skills, he simply ignored those impulses in favour of a purely logical approach.
  • Award Snub: Ian McKellen's performance got rave reviews from critics, yet he was left out in most of the major award ceremonies, perhaps because the film premiered in the summer outside the "Oscar Bait" season of winter releases.
  • Fridge Horror: Holmes' prickly ash came from Hiroshima not long after it had been bombed and was still rubble. More than likely, he and Roger were eating radioactive paste.
  • Older Than They Think: A story about an older Holmes was previously seen in a duology of 1990's miniseries called Sherlock Holmes: The Golden Years, where the fifty-six-year-old Holmes was played by future Middle Earth actor Christopher Lee.
  • Tear Jerker: Just the very premise of one of the most iconic detectives ever succumbing to The Fog of Ages and an increasingly old and frail body.
