  • Reality Subtext: Holmes dismisses his iconic deerstalker hat as an embellishment of the illustrator. This is true of the actual stories — Holmes didn't regularly wear a deerstalker in the stories because it was country attire and he only rarely ventured into the country. However, popular illustrations of these rural moments influenced public perception on how Holmes always dressed.
  • Role Reprise: In a way. Nicholas Rowe portrayed Sherlock Holmes in the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes, and thirty years later he portrays the fictional depiction of Holmes based on the real Holmes' last case.
  • Underage Casting: Ian McKellen was 74 when he was cast as the 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes.
  • Working Title: The film was originally was titled A Slight Trick of the Mind, after the Mitch Cullin novel on which it was based, but the filmmakers changed it to something simpler and more accessible.
