- Awesome Art: A decent amount of people consider Sana Takeda's work to be the best part of the series, and she won two Eisner Awards in 2018 for it.
- Spiritual Adaptation: The series bears more than a few passing similarities to Berserk. Both take place in brutal crapsack Dark Fantasy worlds. Both star a one-armed vengeance-obsessed protagonist: who is considered more terrifying and dangerous than the very Jerkass she is running from thanks to a fusion of her own Unfettered actions and a dangerous Enemy Within. Take into account how Monstress is a Western comic taking place in a fictionalized Asia and Berserk is a Japanese manga taking place in a fictionalized medieval Europe, and the comparison becomes even more appropriate.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Some readers have this, considering the grim nature of the comic, the violence, and that no one can really be trusted.
