  • Anvilicious: The plot grinds to a halt several times so the characters can give speeches full of pro-communist propaganda. Unfortunately this is inevitable in Chinese dramas set during the republican era.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • There are several moments of anti-Japanese propaganda. Unsurprising because the series is set in the 1930s, shortly before Imperial Japan committed atrocities in the Second Sino-Japanese War, but still jarring for non-Chinese viewers.
    • China's infamously homophobic censors refuse to allow a major character to be openly gay. So Mac, a lesbian, is changed to Ru Qing, a straight woman. However, a subplot involving two gay men was retained in "A Song of Blood," and Miss Su expressed sympathy for them just as Miss Fisher does in the original episode.
