YMMV / Mind Game

  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: One of the very last sequences in the film involves Nishi and the others booking it out of the mouth of a gigantic dying whale. It begins with them rowing a motorboat as hard as they can, and when that fails, they literally sprint on top of a giant tsunami wave, coming to grips with shortcomings in their past that almost cost them their lives, all the while dodging an ocean liner, a train, a tank, a 747, a stories-high skyscraper, 'and' a fireball explosion on the way out. It's a really visceral and primal viewing experience, to say the least.
    • Awesome Music: The epic drum solo accompanying the sequence makes it even more memorable.
  • Cult Classic: Even beyond anime circles, this film earned Masaaki Yuasa a name. Noted fans are Satoshi Kon and Bill Plympton. The film and its author have been discussed in animation classes.
  • Magnificent Bastard: God.
    • And in second place, everyone involved with the film crew. Every last one of 'em.
  • What Do You Mean, It Wasn't Made on Drugs?: especially the Disney Acid Sequences in the belly of the whale.
