YMMV / Metroid: Samus and Joey

Go To

  • Broken Base: While Samus And Joey is generally accepted as an enjoyable spinoff by fans, what's contentious is whether or not Samus And Joey is canonical with the games or an Alternate Continuity that shouldn't be considered under most circumstances.
  • Complete Monster: See here.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Samus telling Joey that fear is completely natural, and even she can feel scared sometimes, but she fights even when she's afraid so that she will never lose the people she cares about. It's a very touching moment here. But in Metroid: Other M, Samus becomes frozen in fear during battle and (nearly) loses a close friend as a result, creating one of the most controversial moments of the entire Metroid series.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In EX, Samus's gunship gets stripped of its parts by a race of diminutive tech-savvy kleptomaniacs, much to her aggravation. It's pretty much exactly what happens to a fellow mysterious armored bounty hunter in "Chapter 2: The Child" of The Mandalorian.
  • Signature Scene: The scene that is most often talked about in general is the one page shot of Samus wearing a cloak over her armor in the middle of the desert. Not only does it look cool, but is a Big Damn Heroes moment for that particular chapter with Samus coming to save Joey.
  • Tear Jerker: The death of U-Ton. Over the course of a few days, Joey's made friends with a mysterious android who's been bringing him high quality scrap parts. It turns out that he's an escaped war machine who goes rampaging at night, tearing apart important machinery (hence the quality scrap the next day.) U-Ton himself doesn't know why this is happening, and the change freaks him out as much as anyone else. When Samus arrives to destroy U-Ton, it turns out that he's saddled with a defect that will eventually lead to him detonating with enough power to level a good chunk of the space station Joey's currently living on. While Joey is able to reach U-Ton in his final moments, he still has to be killed to prevent more damage to the space station.
