• Nightmare Fuel: Nearly every time that Jack Elrod drew Rusty was so rife with creepy details that he looked like some kind of monstrous goblin with black eyes. One of the first major clues that James Allen was starting to assist with the strip's artwork (before formally succeeding Elrod) was that Rusty suddenly started looking fairly normal.
• So Bad, It Was Better: Much like what had happened to Dick Tracy a few years earlier, Jack Elrod's retirement as writer-artist and replacement by James Allen was bemoaned a little by those who had come to enjoy poking fun at Elrod's bizarre storylines and Off-Model artwork. Allen's writing and artwork had their quirks at times, but they weren't as completely off-the-wall as Elrod's.
