YMMV / Mama

Go To

  • Fanon: It is pretty much assumed and accepted by the audience that Jeffrey and Lucas are twins, given that they're both played by the same actor and Victoria mistaking Luke for her father, despite no confirmation on-screen or from Muschietti himself.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Not only is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau now famous for playing a twin, but the name of the monster Jeffrey is just one letter away from Joffrey!
  • Jerkass Woobie: Mama. She's a murderous and dangerous spirit that antagonizes anyone who gets near her daughters, but it's out of a genuine desire to protect them. She's also trying to make up for losing her baby when she was alive.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Jeffrey crossed it when he murdered his business partners, his wife, and then tried to kill his daughters; some felt that his one helpful moment later in the film didn't do enough to mitigate this.
  • Narm:
    • The scene where Mama was basically an ambulatory pile of hair.
    • The ending itself is narmish for how over-the-top it is. A sweeping orchestra sounding behind Mama, who is in full blown CG, floating in midair with her hair sweeping around in a majestic wind, holding her arms out and crying as the children decide where their loyalties lie. It goes on for several minutes.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • Our first glimpse of the girls after the five-year Time Skip just goes overboard with their Wild Child states and looks incredibly fake.
    • The more we see of Mama, the less realistic and less scary she gets. By the ending scene she's 100% visible in CG, and super hard to take seriously anymore.
  • The Woobie:
    • Victoria, especially in the end when she's unable to save Lily .
    • Annabel; although she starts the film aloof and not interested in being a mother, she really tried to be good for the girls despite being way out of her depth with them and their "Mama". In the end, she's severely injured and lost one of them.
